![]() Players who are alert can spot these traps, disarm them and even pocket some of the equipment (e.g the bullet or dynamite stick). The faction war is real.Įven when there are no enemies, the ground may be littered with traps, the most common being tripwires which set off swinging blocks of spikes, a pistol, or even a dynamite stick. When Artyom encounters either the Reds or the Nazis, they will open fire on him, thinking he is an enemy scout. The most notable are the Red Line, the communist faction, the Fourth Reich, the fascist faction, and Hanza, a ring of stations keeping the peace in the Metro. There are a few factions Artyom comes to know of during the course of Metro 2033. Nevertheless, they do scale up the horror factor of the game.Īs if mutants weren’t the only problem, humans are still at war with each other. These have to be avoided lest the player face a quick death. There are also other, more bizarre phenomena occurring in the tunnels. The enemy itself weren’t that threatening, it’s just that the growl that made it annoying to deal with. In fact, one of the enemies had such an annoying and dreadful growl, I pretty much ran through those areas instead of methodically picking them off. Artyom can often hear howls and growls echoing in the tunnels (or in the wind if above the surface). Most of them are fast with quick attacks to boot, and some even engage in swarms. The mutants in this game add to the theme of survival horror. Even so, I enjoyed the S.T.A.L.K.E.R games very much, and was eager to sink my teeth into something similar. Metro 2033 incorporates a lot of survival horror elements into its game, and coincidentally shares a few similar themes with the S.T.A.L.K.E.R franchise, although the two aren’t related. Multiple Metro novel easter eggs can be found throughout the game. Exhibition, the station he lives in, comes under attack by mysterious creatures known as the Dark Ones, and Artyom sets out on a mission to save his home station. The story takes place 20 years later in 2033, where the player takes control of 20-year old Artyom, a survivor born before humanity retreated into the tunnels. The citizens of Moscow have sought refuge in the network of Metro tunnels, turning stations into homes and communities. Even the air is toxic, requiring a gas mask at all times. Summaryīased on the novel Metro 2033 by Dmitry Glukhovsky, the world has been engulfed in another nuclear war in 2013, and the surface has become a hostile place teeming with mutants and other horrors. I played the vanilla version, and since certain things have been added into the Redux version, I will point out some of them in this review. Finally had a chance to try this game out.
